Al-Shabaab Attack Garissa University Kenya, Kill 147 (Photos, Video)

The Somali-based militant group, Al-Shabaab, has carried out a deadly attack on a Kenyan university killing at least 147 people.

The attack, according to CNN, occurred early on Thursday, April 2, when several gunmen stormed the Garissa University College firing indiscriminately and taking hostages. (Scroll down for photos)



According to the interior minister, Joseph Nkaissery, the death toll rose to 147. Earlier, security and interior ministry officials said 550 people are unaccounted for at the campus that had about 815 students.

The gunmen clashed with guards for most of the day after forcing their way into dormitories, taking hostages and singling out non-Muslims, the police said.

Officials said they separated Muslims from Christians, freed some of the Muslims while others were taken hostage.

Officials said one terrorist was arrested when he tried to slip through the security cordon and flee the scene. Al-Shabaab has already claimed responsibility for the attack.

The dangerously porous border between Somalia and Kenya has made it easy for Al-Shabaab militants to cross over and carry out attacks.

The deadliest assault by Al-Shabaab in Kenya was in September 2013, when the group attacked the Westgate shopping centre in Nairobi, killing 67 people.
