Why Are State Governors Owing Salaries? Must Read

The various arms of the Nigerian governments at various levels from the federal level down to the local governments have one form of debt or the other to service, since the unforseen incidence of the crashes of oil prices worldwide, the magnitude of this damage to our oil dominated economy can never be overemphasized. In the course of this piece I do not see the need to go into the effects this price dwindling has caused for the Nigerian economy.

The essence of this article is to address the lingering issues that have continued to affect the lives of basic working civil servants in the various state levels of their various states. For several months now, the different states have owed different amounts of salaries to workers working in their states. Of a real fact, we know that states now receive less than what they used to receive when we used to make so much revenue from crude oil sales, but our myopic government never had it in mind to save up adequately for the proverbial rainy days, rather we decided to share our loots at a pace even a cheetah cannot catch up with, the cheaters we have always had in government do no see beyond the tips on their noses.

Going forward to the essence of this piece is the staggering amount of salaries owed to workers, osun state governor with all the accolades he has received owes the workers in his states 6 months unpaid salaries, I was having a conversation with a colleague at my place of work, and he said our boss can do anything to him at work, but the worst he would never accept is for him to withhold his salary, I have worked for you, why don't you pay me? Its been 6 months, how do you expect these people to work? Some have no secondary sources of incomes, how do they feed their families and dependants? Osun state university is one of the costliest universities in Nigeria, some have kids there, and this same state government expects them to pay school fees and tuitions, please where do the parents who have not been paid get school fees for their kids studying at a university owned by the same state government that has refused to pay them?

I served at Imo state during the course of my NYSC, Owelle Rochas Okorocha paid for a few months until October salaries that were paid at the end of November and from the best of my knowledge he has not paid any after that up until now, how do we comprehend this?

Before we say the monies from federal government isn't enough, but isn't this same money enough for the governor to get paid and all his entitlements and that of his commissioners to be paid on time? Or these governors want to claim they have not been paid for the past 6 months?

Before you also go through the path of projects, what project is more important to a man than putting food on the table for his kids and wife? How would a road be important to a man who has not eaten? Or has enough money to fuel his car? Please these governors should do the needful and pay civil servants their salaries.
