The Kano State Government has denied restricting movement Sunday, saying the allegations were malicious and unfounded.
In a statement signed by the state Commissioner for Environment, Dr Ali
Makoda, and made available to THISDAY in Kano, said the issue of
extending sanitation to Sundays does not affect both vehicular and
pedestrian movements.
He said it was in recognition of the sanctity of religion and citizens
rights to movement as enshrined in the constitution that the state
government allows free movement on Sundays.
“We cannot restrict worshippers from going to their sanctuaries. The plan to extend the sanitation exercise is to encourage people to mop up and clear the remnant of the refuse from their localities,” he said.
The commissioner emphasised that participation in both Saturday and the Sunday sanitation extension is voluntary.
“There is no compulsion in the sanitation exercise and participation is voluntary not compulsory,” Makoda said.
