The oldest man in the world named Yasutaro Koide has sadly passed on just two months before his 113th birthday.

Yasutaro Koide was born on March 13, 1903, and before his death revealed that the secret for a long life was not to overdo it, or drink or smoke.

Koide, from Nagoya, Japan, was born on March 13, 1903, and officially became the world's oldest man in August.

He said the secret for a long life was not to overdo it, not to drink or smoke and to "live with joy" Officials said he died of heart failure and pneumonia.

Born and raised in Nagoya, Mr Koide worked as a tailor when he was younger.

The ministry of health, labour and welfare said he died early on Tuesday at a nursing home.

In Japan, 111-year-old Tokyo native Masamitsu Yoshida, born on May 30, 1904, succeeds Mr Koide as the oldest man. It was not immediately known whether Mr Yoshida is also the world's oldest male.

The world's oldest person is an American woman, 116-year-old Susannah Mushatt Jones of Brooklyn, New York.

She claimed the title last year after the death of 117-year-old Japanese woman Misao Okawa.

The oldest person who has ever lived according to Guinness World Records was Jeanne Calment of France, who lived 122 years and 164 days. She died in August 1997.
