Dhaka Customs House Assistant Commissioner Shahiduzzman Sarkar said: “The smugglers packed those live tortoises in cartons and tried to export those to Malaysia as vegetable consignment.”
“The officials seized those baby tortoises from Export Village area of the airport by searching the vegetable cartons around 8pm Sunday. We assume there are more than 3,000 baby tortoises in the vegetable consignment. The tortoises will be freed in presence of the officials of Forest and Environment Department.”
Meanwhile, in a separate drive, the Customs Intelligence officials seized a huge cache of illegal foreign medicines worth Tk2.84 crore from Courier Department area of the airport around 1:45pm Sunday.
He said: “The medicines are used to cure cancer. An organisation from Mohammadpur brought these medicines by a Dubai flight. But they do not have the licence to import the medicines.”
